Artist Statement
My journey to create this series started slowly and almost secretly in my subconsciousness, almost like a dream.
I moved to Riverside with family over ten years ago - a community west of Chicago with curving circular streets, deep, vast stretches of trees along the river, winding and sparkling, along with stunning structures filled with history and stories. It awakened me creatively. I have been walking with my dog Oso every day in different areas by the river, library and downtown, discovering favorite places that I love to observe.
It is almost like saying hello to a good friend or tucking in a sleepy child before bed. First it was the luminous Des Plaines River peeking when I turned the corner from Lawton Road. It was welcoming me every morning with its silver shine. Purple haze, pink clouds from the sunrise and the cool breeze are my favorite good morning.
Then I would go to the hanging bridge and see different faces of the same river, sometimes calm, sometimes muddy and fast flowing, and my favorite: covered with fog and mysterious. On the way back: a corner house with beautiful light during sunrise and sunset. The Riverside library seen at night from the meadows across the river offers a welcome refuge and promise. Fields and forests beyond the hanging bridge with beautiful light in the morning.
Every day in each season, in each place is a little different but also more familiar and through familiarity, more beautiful. I love to witness and capture in my art fleeting magical moments like the surreal haze from Canadian fires, quiet dusk after a blizzard or the blazing sunset on top of the library roof.
My art exploration started with the pandemic, when I needed quiet space from the outside chaos, my work as a medical doctor, and difficult family changes. I did many sketches and watercolors of my neighborhood, but when I began working in oil paint, the concept of making my favorite places a series, was born.
The connection with these seemingly simple but profound and unique moments made me eager to share my experiences with my community. I am grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the stunning aesthetics of this area and to appreciate the chance to share what my new home has done for me as an artist and a fellow resident.

Gosia (Malgorzata) Plummer has always been interested in art and beauty in her everyday surroundings. In 2020 she began to paint on a regular basis, first in watercolor, and most recently she discovered oils. She takes inspiration from travel, hikes in remote places, but most often from daily walks around beautiful Riverside with her beloved dog Oso, seeing the same things with fresh eyes every time. Plummer has exhibited at Palette and Chisel and the Cornelia Arts Building in Chicago and in the Riverside Arts Center's Members exhibitions. She is a member of Plein Air Painters Chicago, Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists, and the Riverside Arts Center. She has taken courses in watercolor and composition and is mentored by Don Yang.
