Getting ready for a day in the studio or just wanting to build your portfolio? Come! This workshop aims to get you warmed-up. Over two mornings we’ll work through various quick drawing exercises that build on intuitive problem solving, as well as slower experiments using negative space. With brief discussions about what works and what doesn’t, the workshop seeks to be a non-competitive yet fast-paced atmosphere. Various methods of mark making will be explored, without using a brush or even color at times. We will be playing with fabric scraps and looking at a textiles’ potential to become part of the mark making. We we’ll be looking at the color white, playing with clay, and thinking about stains.

The class will take short excursions around downtown Riverside looking for compositions to photograph in the every day, over-looked buildings and alleys. The creative focus of this class will be seeing and recognizing pattern, composition, and abstraction in every day objects. This class is a great opportunity for AP students developing a portfolio, or creating great images for social media posts. Each student will select 1 to 2 photos for printing and mounting on foam core for framing. Students will need a phone that takes decent digital images or a digital camera. Students must provide their own sunscreen, bug spray and umbrellas to deal with outdoor elements. Printing costs and foam core are included.

This one day intensive workshop seeks to identify an approach to making paintings which utilizes collage as the springboard for parsing ephemeral knowledge and visual culture. Following a brief discussion regarding the precedent for this method, participants will spend the first half of the day working on collages. The second half of the day will be spent making drawings of the collages, with the intention that the drawings will later become paintings in the artist’s studios. This workshop aims to create a repeatable scenario in which the making process is given the necessary time to conceptually formulate as it is physically mutating through various iterations. Artists are encouraged to bring to the workshop any material that represents the visual culture in which they wish to engage, mash-up, sample, and redistribute into the world through collage, drawing, and painting–and in that order!

Your August Summer evenings are about to get a bit more interesting, but only if you join Riverside Arts Center for its Tuesday Figure Drawing Open Studio. We will be drawing a “scantily clothed” model in the beautiful outdoor space of our art center. With a bit of cover up we can draw outside and have artists of different ages and abilities join in as we investigate movement in form and portraiture. These workshops are uninstructed.
We will start with 2 to 5 minute gesture drawings and then move into 10, 20, and 30 minute long poses.
You don’t have to stay inside to make art, let us meet in the garden.

Government funding for the arts is again being threatened. This class is an opportunity for students to create posters promoting the need for the arts in America.
Students will create 2 to 3 collage posters in the style and spirit of vintage WPA art posters. Each student will select one poster to have printed in an 11″ x 14″ format. All collages will also be digitally photographed and sent to students for personal use. This is a great project for art students building a portfolio.
